One of my favorite things as a reader is discovering books that blend fantasy and romance while also highlighting Black protagonists. It’s always exciting to see representation in genres where we don’t often get the spotlight. If you’re looking to expand your TBR with fresh voices and diverse stories, here are three must-read fantasy and romance books by Black authors that deserve a spot on your shelf.
Lore of the Wilds by Analeigh Sbrana
I came across Lore of the Wilds while browsing the book aisle at my local Target, and the gorgeous cottagecore cover immediately caught my eye. Featuring two striking fae and a naturalista heroine, it was an instant yes from me! Fantasy and romance are my go-to genres, but when I see a Black lead in the mix, I’m even more eager to dive in.
This novel follows 21-year-old Lore Alemeyu, a human girl living in the village of Duskmere, a place surrounded by an enchanted forest that no one can leave. When her home is threatened, she makes a deal with a powerful Fae Lord to escape—her mission: to manage an enchanted library that no fae can enter. But there’s a loophole—a human might just be able to cross its cursed threshold.
Lore pretends to be after riches, but her real goal? To claim something the fae guard fiercely: magic of her own.
As she ventures beyond Duskmere, she finds herself entangled with two very different fae males—both dangerous, both compelling, and both impossible to trust. While navigating this treacherous world, Lore risks not just her life, but her heart.
Seeing Black representation in a fae-centered fantasy with strong cottagecore vibes is incredibly refreshing. If you’re a fan of A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR), then Lore of the Wilds is a perfect addition to your TBR. And the best part? The sequel, Lore of the Tides, is coming in Summer 2025—I can’t wait!
Chrysanthemum Palace by Morgana Sinclayr (Me!)
I know, I know—this might be a little biased, but I can’t make a list like this without mentioning my own book! Instead of talking it up myself, I’ll let one of my readers take the mic:
“Princess Diaries / Forged By Blood / The Selection vibes. Now I need to get the second one 😬” - Emily
Chrysanthemum Palace follows Eleanor Aurora Yamamoto-Aladesanni, a California teen of African and Asian heritage who finds out she’s actually royalty in the Far Eastern kingdom of Narea. But being a princess isn’t all glamour—it means stepping into a world of political intrigue, dealing with a calculating stepmother and a power-hungry stepbrother, and sorting through her complicated feelings for her ever-serious and undeniably handsome bodyguard, Guowei Qi.
If you love:
- AMBW (Asian Male Black Woman) interracial romance
- Rich cultural influences from African and Asian traditions
- Geeky, relatable heroines
- Fantasy grounded in realism
Then Chrysanthemum Palace will be a great addition to your bookshelf!
The Davenports by Krystal Marquis
Like many people, I got swept up in Bridgerton during the pandemic, and that obsession led me to The Davenports. If you loved the elegance and romance of Daphne’s story, you’re going to adore Olivia Davenport’s journey!
Set in 1910s Chicago, The Davenports follows the lives of four ambitious young Black women, all navigating love, expectations, and their own dreams. The story centers on the wealthy Davenport family, inspired by the real-life success of Black entrepreneurs in America. It’s a historical romance packed with charm, drama, and strong-willed heroines ready to forge their own paths.
If you’re a fan of historical fiction with a touch of glamour and a fresh, diverse perspective, The Davenports is a must-read.
